I posted this picture a few years ago around Halloween. But I just have to post it today. This pattern started as a strawberry, in red with yellow dots and some green. They were okay, but could be better. I sent the pattern to @marionverloop and she immediately saw a skull in it. So I changed the colors, adapted the pattern a bit and tadaa! Strawberries turned into skulls!

Day 15 of #septtextilelove24 : Comedy

The first picture is already comedy. Me, trying to record a video of making a warp for tablet weaving. On the table, in a black dress to serve as a background and with slippers. I published this picture on my blog. But the story continues…

I also work at the math department at @tueindhoven and the director of Eurandom asked me to take pictures of a conference. Apparently he studied my blog, so I had to promise him one thing: no climbing on tables and chairs.

For the very first picture of the conference I tried to make an overview of the lecture room. One of the participants gave me a good advice “if you climb on the chair, you will get a better picture”. No one understood why the director and I burst out laughing. 😄

The really nice thing of the missed hole technique in tablet weaving is that you can play around with structures. During Creacafe at @louvresoest by @karen.pompe we learned how to make a leporello. The ideal way to show both back and front of the structures of this wonderful technique. Love my little booklet!

During my classes, I get asked a lot of questions. As a teacher, most of them are fairly predictable. But every now and then, there’s a surprise. For instance, one of the participants asked how the colors of the string heddles would appear in the woven band. At first, I didn’t even understand the question. To me, it is so obvious that the heddles don’t affect the final product. I've always used leftover yarn for them, never realizing that this could be confusing for newbies. Since that moment, I’ve made it a point to give more attention to the heddles and their colors during my introduction.

Using the London subway map as inspiration I designed a liar's cloth on a 1 x 1 cm grid. It means changing supplementary warp threads every cm. A lot of work, but I really liked the process and the end result. From 5 panes I made a Japanese rice bag, also called komekuburo.

In March 2023, I received the tablet weaving books from the legacy of Annelies 't Hart. Among them, I found seven postcards with patterns. Carefully drawn in colored pencil, with small woven samples attached, each one titled. All written in that beautifully old-fashioned school handwriting. A precious little treasure.
With permission I now publish 6 of her patterns. As a tribute to Annelies, ensuring that her charming creations live on and are not forgotten. You can find them on my blog: inkleweavingpages.com

A few years ago @hurdyweaver gave me a drop spindle and some wool and silk. I’ve always considered myself fairly adept with yarn, but this was on a whole new level. After an entire afternoon, I had barely spun more than 5 centimeters of yarn. Even @hurdyweaver, ever the patient teacher, began to show signs of quiet desperation.

My spindle has become a treasured little tool, but I’ll stick to weaving....

Two years ago, I visited Beat Zoderer's exhibition at @museumvoorlinden, and I instantly fell in love with his work. In every piece of his art, I saw endless opportunities to translate it into woven pieces. I was so inspired that I even bought the book about the exhibition (which I usually find too expensive).

Since then, I’ve reached for that book many times. I've made one sample piece, another warp is waiting to be finished, and many other ideas are competing for priority. But there are only 24 hours in a day …

Time for a bit of weaving theory :-)

One of the most frequently asked questions is the difference between inkle weaving with heddles and tablet weaving. Many people believe that tablet weaving offers a greater variety of patterns than inkle weaving, but that's not true: it's just different.
And the reason is: the stitch!

Picture 1 shows inkle weaving with heddles: individual threads move side by side, with the warp threads alternating above and below the weft thread. You always get a straight "stitch".

In tablet weaving (the second picture), the tablets are rotated, causing the threads in each tablet to twist together, forming a braided cord. The weft thread passes through the middle of this cord. The rotation creates a diagonal stitch, which can slant in two directions.

And therefore, tablet weaving doesn't offer more or fewer pattern possibilities compared to inkle weaving with heddles — just different possibilities.

Sometimes, I have to remind myself that I’m not

Sometimes, I have to remind myself that I’m not dreaming: the Lojan inkle loom is a reality! An idea has transformed into 200 looms, most of which are already reserved. What’s strange is how abstract it all felt until now. Today I spent helping in the factory, packing the first looms while the second batch was being produced. Crates full of rods, boxes of screws, stacks of frames—and by around 2 p.m., I was driving home with a car fully loaded with looms. Now, we’re just waiting for the shuttles, and then the first complete packages can finally be shipped.

What to do if you make a mistake when you've already woven 8 cm? Weaving back in tablet weaving is a nightmare... Cutting out the weft thread and carefully pulling out all the small pieces is the only option. Depending on the pattern, a significant portion might unravel on its own, leaving only the borders to fix.

And then ... Take a deep breath, take another one and just start again.

My post is not about recycling or natural dyed yarns, but about a "sustainable" weaving career. Weaving, while rewarding, isn't the most ergonomic profession. My hands are my most precious tools, and experiencing a neck and shoulder injury for the past five weeks (unrelated to excessive weaving!) has reminded me again of the importance of taking care of my body. It's crucial to maintain proper posture while weaving, to get outside and move, and to nourish oneself with healthy food.

I emphasize this in my weaving classes as well because I believe it's often overlooked. People are eager, excited to try one pattern after another, but it's easy to forget that our bodies are our most essential tools for sustaining a lovely hobby!

Last week we had Open Studio in Baarn. One of my visitors asked me how my brain works. What do I use as a start when designing a pattern: an idea, colours or the way tablets work. I really don't know: it just works. So here are two examples.

For the purple band I found the mint green in a shop. At the very moment I saw this very weird kind of yarn, I knew that had to use it as a pattern thread for the #sulawesi patterns by @saga.woolcraft together with shades of blue and purple.

For the blue band my starting point was that I would like to make a 3 colour pickup band. Not having any clue of colours and design. I took my stash to my parents and asked my father to select four colours. These are really colours I wouldn't combine, but I challenged myself to work with any colours he chose. The design "follows" the colours; it just came to my mind when I saw these.

Just a selection of two of my brain processes in choosing colour combinations. And still wondering how my brain works....

Just discovered #septtextilelove with #Septtextilelove24 organised by @seam_collective and decided to participate!

Day 1: Introduction My name is Marieke Kranenburg and I'm from The Netherlands. I'm addicted to weaving, especially tablet weaving and band weaving. Or... maybe I should say: any form of weaving, as long as I can create patterns down to the square centimeter.

I have my own studio in our backyard and I love to share my knowledge with others and to interact with other weavers. So that is my motivation to take part in this challenge. Thanks @seam_collective for organising!
