A new year, a new balance

Posted on January 1, 2024January 1, 2024 by Marieke

In 2023, I made a very important decision. My passion for weaving, combined with a work-related burnout, led me to work as a professional weaver two days a week. Meanwhile, almost half a year has passed, and 2024 is just around the corner. And of course, there is no better date than January 1st to implement a few changes!

And those changes really need to happen, because I am still looking for a new balance. Until the summer, I carried out my role as a project manager for NETWORKS from home, but since October, I’ve been warmly welcomed into the mathematics department at Eindhoven University of Technology. What I always knew has now been proven: this job and the colleagues are also incredibly important to me. But working in Eindhoven just doesn’t align with how I organized my weaving work during the times of COVID-19 and burnout, where I was solely at home.

The Dailies of the last month

And this leads to a paradoxical conclusion: where weaving has been my anchor during the most challenging times of my burnout, and where I’ve just decided to weave professionally for two days a week, I am going to let go of weaving a bit in order to find a new balance.

So… I say goodbye to the Daily Weaving Practice on Instagram from January. Not because I’ve grown tired of it after three years, but actually because I am feeling better. The outside world is becoming more significant again, and simultaneously, I still need more time to relax to stay healthy. An obligation of posting a Daily doesn’t fit into that.

However, completely abandoning the Daily is not an option. It has brought me too many connections with other weavers from around the world. I receive feedback that my account is so inspiring to others. Likewise, I’m also inspired by posts of other weavers, so I understand what it can mean for someone to follow inspiring Instagram accounts.

So, from January 1st there will be a different model: , the “Weaving Updates 2024.” With regular posts but at random times during the week, because there is no doubt that I will continue to weave.  And who knows… it might even become daily again at times. 😉

I wish you all a happy and healthy new year with a lot of inspiration and creativity!

The first daily: 1 January 2021

Liefs Christianne

Today I had the chance to combine my love for math and weaving at @mathfestpwn — a festival all about showing that math can be fun!

After my talk on connections between math and weaving, visitors could try weaving themselves during the walk-in workshop. And wow! So many kids (and adults!) tried tablet weaving, inkle weaving, and rigid heddle weaving.

Huge thanks to the Mathfest team for the organization — it was a great day!

This year not only bands were sent, but also extensive letters! Here are some examples. For the complete overview see https://www.bandweefblog.nl/winter-banden-wissel-2025-de-resultaten/

That inspired me to put my own spin on it: geometric figures in neon colors on a black background. Too wide for an inkle loom, so I used a shaft loom instead. Just took it off the loom—on to the next one in this style because it’s so much fun! #doubleweave #loueterica #bandweaving #inkleweaving #scheepjesmaxisweettreat #geometric

It fits on your lap.

You can remove the upper front peg, giving you more space and to avoid twist you have to flip your border tablets less frequently.

And Lojan introduced the Tiny Tablets last week: 5x5 cm (2x2 inches): firm and smooth!

Last but not least: the cool yellow shuttle!

I’m teaching a series of tablet weaving courses I’m teaching a series of tablet weaving courses at @biebalmelo organized by @weeffanaat . A very enthusiastic and talented group of 7 weavers. Last time we did the 4 color pebble weave and the results are great and very inspiring! Today they started a double faced band. And during lunch we went to the market nearby to buy some Scheepjes maxi 😄
Great day, this is why I love to teach!
