The last day of the year… A year ago I decided, just like Jennifer Williams, to weave for 15 minutes every day to finish all my UFOs. And I have done it! During holidays, with headaches, on special days like Eastern and Christmas…. If I’m honest, working from home did help: travel time became weaving time and a tablet weaving board is standard on the kitchen island, so I can weave during coffee, tea and lunch breaks.
As icing on the cake, the Squirrel Band, the band that started it all, is finally finished. In my blog from a year ago I already talked about “those damned squirrels that grin at me maliciously”. They happily continued grinning for the whole past year. 🐿️
What’s the story behind the squirrels? To me, squirrels are the ultimate symbol of being on vacation. Even now that they are just walking around in our backyard. So when we got a pattern of a squirrel with the new homework assignment for our weaving group, I decided to make a squirrel band.
I wasn’t satisfied with the first squirrel. It walked in high heels and had spikes on its nose and eyelashes. I adapted the pattern, so it had slightly less high heels, but one of the spikes had to stay in order not to get too long floats. I liked weaving the first six squirrels, but after that it became pretty boring to weave. However, I knew that the power of this design is in the repetition, so every once and a while I forced myself to weave another squirrel. Since I didn’t want to have grinning squirrels joining me in 2022, I put in some effort in it to finish it today and I must say… I do like the result!
Now on to 2022. I have actually found it very stimulating to weave a piece every day. Posting the results on Insta brought me into contact with other weavers and it has inspired other people. I was in doubt of to continue the Daily Band Practice, so I published a poll with the choices: Daily band 2022, Daily Weaving 2022, Weekly Weaving and Please stop! The result: 2022 will be dedicated to wider weaves: Daily band practice will become Daily weaving practice. Still with a lot of bands, but I will also show some other pieces. With apologies to that one follower who prefers the end of the Dailies… 😉
