Last day of #septtextilelove24 : favorite post of another participant. So here it is, the post by @juliacrooktextiles . I always love to see where people find their inspiration. In this post you really see the connection between inspiration and the end result. But that’s not the only thing; the whole composition of this post is wonderful! The grid, the way the pictures are organized, the colors. A clear story presented beautifully.

Day 25 of #septtextilelove24 : learning

I often hear that weaving is difficult and that you really need to master the basics before trying anything new—usually in a tone that's almost discouraging. But it can be so much more fun! My way of learning is all about play—experimenting over and over.

No need to start with plain weave and perfect your edges before moving on. No waiting for a class to start. I saw overshot weaving and thought, "That looks cool, I'll give it a try." What's the worst that can happen? You might waste some yarn, but you can minimize that by starting small, using a short warp, and choosing cheaper yarn.

My very first warp ended up in the trash, but I learned so much! I managed to weave the overshot and then moved on to doubleweave, still just as unstructured, still just as fun. And honestly, the results were pretty good!

Nowadays, I do take lessons, which are super helpful and inspiring, especially learning from great teachers and weaving with others. But that doesn't stop me from playing around on my little loom outside of class. My brain loves it!

This is my favourite way of drawing patterns: good old-fashioned paper and pencil. But of course with nice pencils, a fancy note book and a cup of ginger tea.

If you give a lot of workshops, you also end up with many leftover pieces of warp. And I really don’t want to throw them away. So, I always tie two warps together to create a new one. 116 knots leading to 4 key fobs.

When making tea towels I also want to have matching loops. So instead of warping a separate Inkle loom, I use the leftover warp of my tea towels. I ignore the reed, select 20 threads of the warp to make the loops and weave them warp-faced.

I'm still very proud of this tablet woven spectacle pouch, which was published in Little Looms by @longthreadmedia . I designed a double weave, with red on the outside and green on the inside and it is woven in one piece. I also loved the professional pictures made of this projects, so here is one of them.

Day 18 of #septtextilelove24 : waiting to be resolved

I had prepared a 3-meter warp for a double-weave scarf, but things didn’t go as planned. Threads broke, the weave was uneven, and I found myself no longer enjoying the process. With 2.5 meters still left, I decided to take a break from weaving on my David loom. After months of hesitation, I finally cut the warp—though in an organized way. I separated it into bundles by color, carefully maintaining the cross, so I can reuse it in the future. Now, my warp sits neatly in a little box, waiting for the next project. The question is, am I ready for it?

Day 17 of #septtextilelove24 : Text / textile I'm working on a double weave with a text. I already know which colours should be in my warp, but I couldn't get clear how to arrange the letters. So I took my color pencils and paper to draw all the letters in all possible colours. After two days I got my final design. I posted this picture a few years ago around Halloween. But I just have to post it today. This pattern started as a strawberry, in red with yellow dots and some green. They were okay, but could be better. I sent the pattern to @marionverloop and she immediately saw a skull in it. So I changed the colors, adapted the pattern a bit and tadaa! Strawberries turned into skulls!

The first picture is already comedy. Me, trying to record a video of making a warp for tablet weaving. On the table, in a black dress to serve as a background and with slippers. I published this picture on my blog. But the story continues…

I also work at the math department at @tueindhoven and the director of Eurandom asked me to take pictures of a conference. Apparently he studied my blog, so I had to promise him one thing: no climbing on tables and chairs.

For the very first picture of the conference I tried to make an overview of the lecture room. One of the participants gave me a good advice “if you climb on the chair, you will get a better picture”. No one understood why the director and I burst out laughing. 😄

The really nice thing of the missed hole technique in tablet weaving is that you can play around with structures. During Creacafe at @louvresoest by @karen.pompe we learned how to make a leporello. The ideal way to show both back and front of the structures of this wonderful technique. Love my little booklet!

During my classes, I get asked a lot of questions. As a teacher, most of them are fairly predictable. But every now and then, there’s a surprise. For instance, one of the participants asked how the colors of the string heddles would appear in the woven band. At first, I didn’t even understand the question. To me, it is so obvious that the heddles don’t affect the final product. I've always used leftover yarn for them, never realizing that this could be confusing for newbies. Since that moment, I’ve made it a point to give more attention to the heddles and their colors during my introduction.

Using the London subway map as inspiration I designed a liar's cloth on a 1 x 1 cm grid. It means changing supplementary warp threads every cm. A lot of work, but I really liked the process and the end result. From 5 panes I made a Japanese rice bag, also called komekuburo.

In March 2023, I received the tablet weaving books from the legacy of Annelies 't Hart. Among them, I found seven postcards with patterns. Carefully drawn in colored pencil, with small woven samples attached, each one titled. All written in that beautifully old-fashioned school handwriting. A precious little treasure.
With permission I now publish 6 of her patterns. As a tribute to Annelies, ensuring that her charming creations live on and are not forgotten. You can find them on my blog: inkleweavingpages.com

A few years ago @hurdyweaver gave me a drop spindle and some wool and silk. I’ve always considered myself fairly adept with yarn, but this was on a whole new level. After an entire afternoon, I had barely spun more than 5 centimeters of yarn. Even @hurdyweaver, ever the patient teacher, began to show signs of quiet desperation.

My spindle has become a treasured little tool, but I’ll stick to weaving....
